One of the granite "Cannonballs" at the base of the Battle Monument overlooks the famous view of the Hudson River. The Battle Monument was dedicated in 1897 to commemorate 2230 officer and soldiers killed in the Civil War. It was designed by the famous 19th century architect, Stanford White.
